"ZANZIBAR"

  Holy Cow has it really been a year since my last post?! So many things can happen in a year, and thank god I always have my art, my "soul food" as I call it. Keeps me sane or keeps me crazy, one or the other.

I entered the "Abstract Only!" show in April, and lo and behold I got an honorable mention and the State Foundation for Art and Culture bought one of my pieces, titled  "Zanzibar". Woo Hoo! I am thrilled! It was a very experimental piece using housepaints and spackle, then sanded and sanded and scratched through the layers letting my intuition be my guide...

"ROUNDEZVOUS"

Painted in Puako in my studio on an 8" x 8" wood panel in oils using a palette knife, I had lots of fun with this one! Inspired by the lovely sunsets just outside my door (and settling into the ocean), I figured, "Well shoots, why stop where the frame starts?"

"North from the Porch"

The start of a new series of "skyscapes" on small wood panels, using mostly my palette knife. It's quite liberating  putting the paint of thick, and then playing in it. This is the view from my little porch looking north to the Kohala Mountains at sunset. Enjoy!

"Cherries in the Snow"

             "Cherries in the Snow" was the name of the lipstick my mama so elegantly wore.

              40" x 30" water-based house paints on canvas.

"Crazy Legs"

       This piece reinvented itself at least half a dozen times. I tried to give it "free rein" , allowing it to tell me where it wanted to go. It called itself "Crazy legs" as I was painting the final version.

"Paprika"

   In this piece I was exploring the "push/pull" dynamics of shapes and negative/ positive spaces, while also trying to balance hues and small splashes of other colors.
   This painting was a good teacher - I learned so much as I continued playing with and breaking down the different colored areas. And I wore that paprika-colored paint for days!

"appaloosa"

This is the "one that got accepted " in the "ABSTRACT ONLY!"  show that just opened in Hilo. Yay!! Happy to be part of this show ... not an easy one to get juried in.

Inspired by a box of new paint colors this was a playful piece, going off some of the edges and feeling like a happy little kid with my brushes and new pots of paints. Trying to balance softness and sharp with a feeling of movement. Kinda like riding a horse.

"Look Around"

This ia a series of 37  8" x 8" pieces I created that are now hanging in the Volcano Art Center's Invitational Show,  Hawaiian Cordage: Fiber, Form &Function.  I am so proud to be included in this show!!The exhibit will be on display July 8th through August 19th, 2017. Each panel represents one of 10 cordage plants that are found on the Island of Hawaii.  Enjoy!!

"Maui through the Coconut Trees"

Some days...we're just "lucky we live Hawaii"!  Looking out toward Maui on beautiful spring day (yes! we have seasons here!)  watching out for falling coconuts!

"Languish"

I was sitting by these trees on a lazy afternoon in Hawi painting a small watercolor, struck by their pale silhouettes. Recently I painted this larger version in oils loosely based on this same scene.

"Kohala Mountain Clouds"

I never have to travel far to find my inspiration! Here, the afternoon light on Kohala Mountain near my home, and always the deep blue sea.

"Such a Winter's Day"

Rendered breathless by the intoxicating loveliness of nature here: the clouds... the sea... the warm salty smell to the air. It envelopes all of my senses.

This was a redo of the original , where there was an ukulele in the painting. Turned it into a whippet, (just because!) Love it now...

"Cherries in the Snow"

"I'iwi"

This is the second of my entries in the Hawaii Nei Competition in Hilo, which features native plants and animals of Hawaii. I am always fascinated by these I'iwi, such lovely birds with their curved beaks, adapted for the ohia lehua blossoms.

"AMAKIHI"

This is the first of two entries I have in this year's Hawaii Nei Competition, which features native plants and animals of Hawaii. I liked the colors of this little bird, and how he blends into the Mamane  trees.

"Storm Clouds Over Puako"

Painted this one about a year ago, in my backyard as the winds were blowing every manner of things by my head! It was crazy! When I saw "Toto" go flying by, I knew it was time to get inside!!
