fireflies

Inspired by a woman dancing and chanting, I kept going, following her lead, and it evolved into this piece. House paints and spackle, sanded and layered over and over again. Enjoy!

Lesley's Plumerias"

Had some time to play during this "Stay at Home" lockdown, and how better to play than with my paints!  This was a fun one, in a more graphic style than I am used to using.
Sold this one to Lesley H.

SPRING!

There is the prettiest tangle of flowers blooming beside the outdoor table where I have my coffee in the mornings. Some hibiscus and bougainvillea surrounded by random leaves and vines. They greet me every morning against a lovely backdrop of blue.

KOHALA, JUNE

Another one of the of 5 pieces of mine that were accepted into the Plein Air Perspectives juried show in Hilo. I am honored and humbled to be one of 40 artists in the show! This was painted in Puako, looking north toward Kohala mountain in the early morning, ... I  just lovelovelove the mornings here!!

BIRTHDAY

Painted in 2014, I remember the day and the location, just down the beach from my house. (on the Big Island of Hawaii) And yep- I did jump in when I was finished with the painting!

SHORELINE

Hanging out in "my backyard" in theses time of "social distancing",... worried about what the heck is going on in our world, but I could not be happier that I get to live in such a magical place. This one was painted a few days ago. wind in my hair, sand in my toes...just joy to be alive.

ONLY YESTERDAY

Whew, I am ever so grateful to live where I do in these crazy time of "social distancing." So I am being my own "artist in residence " here where I live. These are the backyard steps to the beach, and while I don't usually paint in the afternoon, preferring to get "up n at it" early in the morning,  I gave it a whirl.
Yipes! Mosquitos!

CLOSE TO HOME

Being "quarantined" , or "Artist in Residence" as I like to call it, certainly has its benefits. I got up early to paint the first soft breezes falling through the palms on the beach behind my house. Heaven.

FIRST SONG

Got up at the crack of dawn and was ready on my balcony facing the sunrise over Mauna Kea. I had to paint pretty darn fast to catch the darkness AND the softly appearing colors! As I was painting I was aware of the first birds just starting to sing. The lights in mid- right center are of Waikoloa Village. Painted in Puako.  Enjoy!

Mauna Kea

I was sitting in a van for work last summer facing Mauna Kea mountain, waiting for the tour guide to return with my guests for me to drive back to Kona. (This was before all the activity up on the mountain) Painted this little watercolor around 5:00 pm as the sun was getting lower and the shadows were growing longer.
This is another one of my 5 entries in the Plein Air Perspectives show in Hilo that opened on Feb 7.

DAWN, KOHALA

This was one of two paintings I had  in the West Hawaii Community Health Center "Art is Healing" show / competition in the November of 2019. (Fish are Jumping was the other one) . And woo hoo! I won the Juror's Choice award! I felt honored and humbled and totally surprised!
Again, the Kohala Mountain cliffs, as seen from the south end of Puako in the early morning  as the sun hits those first wave tops. Painted on location.
**(And The Health Center since notified me they are going to purchase this painting! Woo double-hoo!!)

A Delicate Balance

My entry in the Hawaii Nei juried conned in 2019 in Hilo, Hawaii. I won a Juror's Choice Award! Wow, you could have knocked me over, I was so surprised!
This one went through several stages as I got really sick with bronchitis right after starting it, and by the time I was strong enough to work on it again I only had 3 days left before the deadline!

"Oh Lovely Mauka"

Here's one of the 5 paintings I had accepted into Plein Air Perspectives competition in Hilo. It opened last night at the Wailoa Center. This piece is called "Oh lovely Mauka!" My brother was working up mauka (mountain -side) in Captain Cook and invited me there in the early morning to paint. This was looking north toward Hualalai Mountain. Brrr....boy was it cold up there in the morning! (maybe the 2800' level? )

"fish are jumpin..."

Wandered down to one of my favorite spots here by the bay, where I always find some fishing person by the shore. Thought I'd share their space for a while. Just a perfect summer morning..."lucky we live Hawaii!"

"Rise n Shine"

"A little bit too ambitious for my first reductive Moku Hanga print. Instead of just one or 2 colors, I went for 7! Arrrgghhh!! Oh well, part of the learning curve...

"ZANZIBAR"

Holy Cow has it really been a year since my last post?! So many things can happen in a year, and thank god I always have my art, my "soul food" as I call it. Keeps me sane or keeps me crazy, one or the other.

I entered the "Abstract Only!" show in April, and lo and behold I got an honorable mention and the State Foundation for Art and Culture bought one of my pieces, titled  "Zanzibar". Woo Hoo! I am thrilled! It was a very experimental piece using housepaints and spackle, then sanded and sanded and scratched through the layers letting my intuition be my guide...

Here tis, enjoy!

"ROUNDEZVOUS"

Painted in Puako in my studio on an 8" x 8" wood panel in oils using a palette knife, I had lots of fun with this one! Inspired by the lovely sunsets just outside my door (and settling into the ocean), I figured, "Well shoots, why stop where the frame starts?"

"North from the Porch"

The start of a new series of "skyscapes" on small wood panels, using mostly my palette knife. It's quite liberating  putting the paint of thick, and then playing in it. This is the view from my little porch looking north to the Kohala Mountains at sunset. Enjoy!

"Crazy Legs"

This piece reinvented itself at least half a dozen times. I tried to give it "free rein" , allowing it to tell me where it wanted to go. It called itself "Crazy legs" as I was painting the final version.

"Paprika"

In this piece I was exploring the "push/pull" dynamics of shapes and negative/ positive spaces, while also trying to balance hues and small splashes of other colors.
This painting was a good teacher - I learned so much as I continued playing with and breaking down the different colored areas. And I wore that paprika-colored paint for days!

"appaloosa"

This is the "one that got accepted " in the "ABSTRACT ONLY!"  show that just opened in Hilo. Yay!! Happy to be part of this show ... not an easy one to get juried in.

Inspired by a box of new paint colors this was a playful piece, going off some of the edges and feeling like a happy little kid with my brushes and new pots of paints. Trying to balance softness and sharp with a feeling of movement. Kinda like riding a horse.

"Languish"

I was sitting by these trees on a lazy afternoon in Hawi painting a small watercolor, struck by their pale silhouettes. Recently I painted this larger version in oils loosely based on this same scene.

"I'iwi"

This is the second of my entries in the Hawaii Nei Competition in Hilo, which features native plants and animals of Hawaii. I am always fascinated by these I'iwi, such lovely birds with their curved beaks, adapted for the ohia lehua blossoms.

This is the first of two entries I have in this year's Hawaii Nei Competition, which features native plants and animals of Hawaii. I liked the colors of this little bird, and how he blends into the Mamane  trees.

"Puakea Ranch"

Quite simply, a stunningly beautiful day to be out painting! Looking down from Puakea Ranch (where I painted "the Cowboy House" ) I could see all the way over to Maui. Ahhh...north Kohala at it's finest...

"The Cowboy House"

Went out with a several plein air painters to a ranch up the road yesterday, and what a gorgeous day! After everyone went home I stayed to paint "the Cowboy House". It was my second painting of the day, and (I think) the better of the two . The first was an ocean view, across to Maui. Hmmm...jury is still out on that one...
Enjoy!

The lovely "sea trees" in my "backyard".... hope I did them justice. Got up several mornings in a row  at the break of dawn to catch the first rays of the sun on the tips of the driftwood.

"Old Art Center"

A large plein air piece done about 11 years ago in Holualoa. This was the old Art Center. I had a small art gallery across the street, where Sam's Ukulele Gallery is now. Painted this right from the front porch. A piece in time...this building is now gone..and who knows whatever happened to the Sampan?

"Approaching Storm"

This is a larger version of a small painting I did on location here in Puako a few months back. At that time I was miserably cold (yes! here in Hawaii!) and it was super windy and all I could do to keep painting! Painted on my lap since my easel wouldn't stand up in the wind.
Working on this one on my back porch studio I still had the memories of that day...

"Kiholo Bay in March"

One of my favorite places on the Big Island...got there early and painted till noon or so. Throughout the morning the wild goats would wander by...(you can smell em before you see them!) but I love the fact we are sharing the landscape. A peaceful painting session.

"Paniau looking North"

I painted this piece in my "studio" (the back porch!) making it larger than the original I had done on location, trying to simplify the shapes and still keep it loose. I'm happy with it! Enjoy..

Easter weekend and the crowds were coming in all morning! Good thing I got there early and left by the time it was crazy! But the laughter of the families is always a nice "background music".  A beautiful morning...
